Whatever you call it – the Great Resignation or the Great Reshuffle – what is certain is that the phenomenon isn’t just an American one. In the US in 2021, a total of 68.9 million workers left their jobs in 2021, with nearly 70% doing so voluntarily. In the UK, the Office of National Statistics reported that resignations rose from the end of 2020 through the next six months, and then significantly exceeded pre-pandemic levels in the final quarter of 2021.
And according to Microsoft, in Canada, 15% of workers left their jobs in 2021 with 52% of Generation Z and Millennials saying they’d think about quitting this year. 37% of Canadian workers also say they are open to new opportunities.
But what’s really interesting is a statistic discovered by professional services giant Grant Thornton: it found that of those workers who had made their own great resignation to find a role that better suited their needs, 31% of them had two other job offers before accepting their current role. 16% had three other offers and 6% had four.
