North American markets lower in final morning of 2019, loonie higher

TORONTO — North American stock indexes were down moderately on the last morning of trading for 2019.

The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index was down 53.90 points at 17,044.66 in late morning trading.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 51.58 points at 28,410.56. The S&P 500 index was down 4.64 points at 3,216.65, while the Nasdaq composite was down 5.91 points at 8,940.08.

The Canadian dollar traded at 77.07 cents US, up from Monday’s average of 76.58 cents US.

The February crude contract was down 28 cents at $61.40 per barrel and the February natural gas contract was down 1.5 cents at 2.171 per mmBTU.

The February gold contract was up $5.70 at US$1,524.30 an ounce and the March copper contract was down three cents at US$2.80 a pound.
