TORONTO — Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:

Energy conference

Investment firm Peters and Co. Ltd. holds its annual energy conference in Toronto. The meetings, which will hear from some of the big names in the country’s energy sector, starts Tuesday and runs until Thursday.

Housing starts

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. will release preliminary housing starts data for August on Tuesday. The annual pace of housing starts fell in July.

Roots results

Retailer Roots Corp. reports its second-quarter results on Wednesday. The company appointed Meghan Roach, managing director at Searchlight Capital Partners, as interim chief financial officer last month.

HBC results and conference call

Hudson’s Bay Co. releases its second-quarter financial results before markets open and holds a conference call with analysts to discuss the results on Thursday. The retailer is evaluating an offer by a group led by chairman Richard Baker to take the company private at a price of $9.45 per share.

Household debt reading

Statistics Canada will release its latest reading on household debt in its national balance sheet and financial flow accounts report on Friday. The report includes the much-watched household debt-to-income ratio.
