TORONTO — Uber Technologies Inc. is opening a new engineering hub in Toronto and expanding its existing self-driving vehicle centre in the city.
The San Francisco-based tech giant’s chief executive officer Dara Khosrowshahi says the hub and expansion will help the company build and update its infrastructure so it can continue to scale and offer more features and products to riders, drivers and cities.
The company expects the new engineering office to open in Toronto in early 2019 and create hundreds of jobs in the country.
The office will be Uber’s eighth engineering hub outside the U.S.
Uber is also spending more than $200 million over the next five years on expanding its self-driving vehicle centre, which opened in Toronto in May 2017.
It will also introduce to the market Express Pool, which allows Uber customers to share a ride and the cost of the trip with other users with similar routes.
